THE FUCKING DENTIST

i don't mind going to the dentist... in fact,
most of the routine work is pleasurable for me...
we've discussed this before....

tomorrow i'm having an 'emergency' dental
visit due to the fact that my lower wisdom
tooth has broken (and i only just noticed
it when it started giving me pain).

about 1/4 of my tooth is missing... and i
have no farkin clue how that happened...
so he won't be getting an explination from me.

i know it will have to be removed because
where it had broken... was in the center
and down the side to the gumline (so basically,
one full corner of this tooth is gone --
imagine a 4 square)

so yeah... i don't mind going to the dentist...
even though the worst thing i hate is the
tartar cleaning... but its bareable...

what i fucking HATE is the beratement
that dentists feel they owe you. they aren't
like 'normal' doctors...

sure they are serious like other doctors...
and yeah, doctors will tell you what you
should/shouldn't be doing...

but in my experience... dentists are basically
assholes... and really patronize people
about their dental habits.

** shatzy's argument **

first of all, teeth are different than
most body parts. sure they require regular
maintenance and shit to keep them doing ok.
but even with the advances in modern
technology... teeth are meant to be used.
this is why, i believe, teeth are the
single-most hassle when it comes to body
maintenance. they wear down... its their
job. they literally show signs of aging...
you can't help that.

i dare to question that there has NEVER
been a person that has gone without major
tooth repair in their lives... and i mean
from birth to death.

its just the nature of the beast.

so... rounding out my post... i have to
go to the dentist tomorrow... and while
i am mentally prepared for the physicalities
that will be involved to remedy my broken
wisdom tooth...

i am not... nor will i ever be ready or
mentally prepared to deal with beratement
from some cocksucking dentist.

I hear ya Shatzy. And coming from a familly that really didnt do much in the way of "hey go brush and floss your tetth before bed youngster or your grounded" I came from a family that has spent many hours under the airplane landing lights of the dentist chair. Except in my smal town we had only one dentist and he did more of his own drugs then I think he gave his patients. I dont think he could find a cavity if it bite him in the ass.

Asshow one day while wrestling with a girlfriend who was trying to tickle me I grabbed her hands and wouldnt let go. By the time I did she was sooooo mad that she jerked her hands out and her elbow hit my front teeth causing an absess in one of my upper teeth. By the end of the day I would have paid any farmer $100 just to pull the damn thing out with his John Deer.

Needless to say I had to visit the dentist. He stated I needed a root canal in my tooth. It hurt so bad I never felt him numb it up. What was to follow was enough for me to want to give him my first born. He drilled it and releaced the absess. It was sooooooooo relieving that I was almost jumping for joy. He packed it and told me to return the nexy day after it continued to drain.

On the appearance of going the day with the thought that these guys arent actually that bad of people I prop myself up in his chair with a big smile and howdy. He begins working. Ohhh look good. We are now going to remove the rest of the root.... reflect the gum line and clean it out.. blaa blaa. All I remember was he ran somethign down the hole that looked like a wire brush going in and felt like hot neddles tapped to a baseball bat. He ran that around a few times and then figuring I wasnt having enough fun he then cuts my gum about 1 inch (1 slit on both side of the tooth) and then prys it up front and back. clean clean clean . By now I have a full grasp upon his chair as he has my undivided attention. He then says he is finished and needs to run a needle thru the gum to stitch it back up. Not sure if that was the needle that broke the camels back (no pun intended) or if it was the novicain wearing off but as soon as I heard a creek and then SNAP as the arm on his old dentist chair broke off. He looked at me and said "HMMMM you want some more novicain?" as I am bleeding from the mouth and ready to punch him square in the head.

He puts a temp filling in it and wraps it up as he could tell wasnt keeping me there a min longer then needed.

He stated to come back in a month so we could see if the tooth lived or not. WHAT? LIVED? You just did all that crap and you arent sure it will live.Ya right buddy Screw you. Didnt matter anyhow. Was eating lunch 2 weeks later and bit into the food and snapped the tooth right at the gum line. Too short to build up and it was a front tooth so cant really run around with it gone. HMMMMMMMM $2000 I now have a bridge and many hours more in the dentist chair. Do I love them anymore? No!! But at least the one I have now shut up after she told me "you need to keep good care of these teeth. They need to last you a life time. Brush, floss, blaa blaa blaa" Well after my last experiance with the dentist I brush and floss so much that I get crap for that now. So I told her.. Ya I ride motorcycle.. FAST too, and take many many track days. I am pretty sure they dont have to last too long... I smiled and walked out knowing it pissed her off.

whoa.... cya.... that was the most awesome story!!!

well... not awesome that you experienced it...
but awesome that you really made me feel like
i was there.

i know what you mean...

i had gone to the dentist yesterday due to the
broken tooth i mentioned above.

so i go in... they gimme xrays... and the dentist
comes in and starts to point at my xray...
telling me that *basically* my entire wisdom
tooth is hollow and needs to come out (DUH!!!).
however, as he explained it to me, when a tooth
is hurting you, its a good sign that the tissue
surrounding the tooth has tensed up... making
ANY possible anesthetic difficult to be effective.

he gives me a few options:

1) he gives me some local anesthetic in the hopes
that my tissue will accept it and it will go
numb. also some lovely nitrious oxide to calm me.

2) put me on some meds for a few days and come back next week.

with the first option-- he said that although
he would be gassing me up and giving a shot...
there was NO GUARANTEE that the tissue would
accept the medication... thereby had he started
to cut and pull... i may experience pain as if
i had no meds. if that were to happen, he would
then try to give more anesthetic to solve the
immediate pain... but because the surgery had
already started, couldn't guarantee that the
meds would work... but he'd have to finish the job.

with the second option, he'd give me a couple
of perscriptions. one for penicillin (for the
infection in my gums) and one for hydrocodone
(for the pain). under this option, the pen. would
fix the infection and the hydro. would relax
the tissue... whereby when i visited again,
the anesthetic could be administered and there
would be no problems about numbing the gums.

which did i choose???

option B

though it was more expensive... there is no
fuckin way i'm going to have the tooth pulled
with no guarantee that the anesthetic would work.
i figured i could relax a coupla days high on
drugs and waltz in to his office on monday to
rectify the problem.

so here i am... pain-free... and waiting to have
that sunnovabitch removed on monday.

oh... let me also mention that the denist was
overly adamant about wisdom teeth... in fact,
i think had there been a petition to remove
all wisdom teeth by a certain age, he would have
signed it immediately.

he was telling me that no matter how many times
you brush and whatnot... wisdom teeth are basically
useless and how it doesn't surprise him that
so many people have problems with them. he also
said that most people leave their wisdom teeth
in because they don't cause pain/problems
immediately... and also because they don't wish
to spend the money.

however, he truly believes that they are THAT
worthless and that its best to spend a few
hundred to have them removed when they first
come in as opposed to waiting for when they
fuck up.

this made sense....

so i'm spreading the word

Well if it helps you feel better I broke a tooth of at gum at an angel like you did. Though it wasnt the wisdom tooth. They pulled it and shortly after pulling it my rt wisdom tooth decided to make an appearance. It was coming in at an angel and was in his words" pushin on the next tooth in line and blaa blaa could cause an infection blaa blaa needs to come out ASAP blaa blaa that was 2 yrs ago. So far it is 3/4 the way and they nag me every chance they can get to get them ALL pulled. If I go under it will cost about $1200 out of pocket. If I take a med before and get a local then it is $400. There it sits and will do so until it hurts me so bad I want it pulled out or he manages to sneek into my house and pull it in my sleep. I am a stubborn bastard and he wont win this one. I figure they are their for a reason.

Yuck..I have 4 impacted wisdom teeth..which means 4 under the jawbone..thus far ive had no problems apart from a few days of pain every few years when they decided to try and move and find out they cant go anywhere..my dentist said..in order to remove them..they'd have to put me to sleep as he would have to dislocate my jaw in order to reach in there(i have a very small mouth he said)..magine that..hahaha..anyhow..I have what they call TMJ..where you grit your teeth when your sleepin..i did it so much and didnt really know it..until i broke my very last tooth..all the way in the back..like you said shatz..split down the middle pretty much..i had to have it pulled..now...the gas was wonderful..i recommend it..haha..there was no pain involved for me..until after..my lips were split on both sides of my mouth..where he had stretched them as wide as he could to reach into my mouth..then the gums were so sore...ouch..i had the choice of gettin a crown..or having it pulled..crown was 500-600 bucks..pulled was 100..i said pull the damn thing..who's ever gonna see it in the back of my mouth.. ..i dont like dentists..hope your visit wasnt too bad..

going under was never an option discussed....
i guess they feel i need to experience all the
drama. still... thats quite expensive for one
tooth.

to have xrays, my tooth pulled, drugs for the
weekend, and anesthetic on the glorious day...
its gonna/has cost me a grand total of: $285

and blazey... i think i grind too... i'm not
really sure. i don't really fear the pulling...
but like you said... the after-effects. can't
wait to get the meds for that. unfortunately,
i will have to attend school the next day...

bah... i'm no puss

Me and dentist don't mix...I am frightfully afraid in every imaginable facet of these people....for the exact reason I don't want to hear what a horrible irresponsible boob I am for not taking care of my teeth and the pain..... I have many bad teeth in the back and I am now looking at dental plan options to lessen the burden of HIGH cost dentistry. It's something that we all must do, if not we experiance discomfort eating and occasional pain. Its expensive to maintain and repair. It sucks. I am taking out 2 dental plans. One my boss pays for and one I am paying for. It will help get my payments down while I have the extensive work I needed over the next 2 years. I used dentalplans.com and it was great. Check it out, you might find something helpful. I did.

Tooth Pain - I had a dentist tell me all tooth pain is usually temporary. It comes and goes as toxins release. It can last an hour or weeks depending on how bad the tooth is. I know when I hurt, in a few days or so it goes away. Like clockwork it does. Obviously doing this too much increases the damage occuring so I don't recommend.

Wisdoms - I was told are a waste of tooth. They decay faster and easier and are useless. I was told to never spend money repairing them. Just get rid of them. I had 2 taken while I was pregnant. (being pregnant takes calcium from your teeth) They cracked and had to come out. They popped out with no effort. Dentist said I was the easiest one he had ever had. I was grateful as I sat there trembling.

My teeth hurt talking about this.......LOL..

There is my contribution.

to me, the dentist is like a doctor.. i hate 'em..

i had to go in there on valentines day on year.. same day i had my faithful doggy put to sleep so i was already in pain.. *dramatic sigh.. i had to get three fuckin teeth pulled.. yeah so they gave me shot after shot of that freeze shit.. didn't fuckin work.. so what'd they do.. YANK 'EM ANYWAYS.. i'll admit it.. i cried.. i screamed.. i left nail marks in the arms of his chair.. it was horrible.. i had to go back the next week and get 2 more pulled..*chokes..

everytime i go, after that, i've had perfect check ups.. he tells me how good i'm doing.. so i stopped going.. i've recently received my wisdom teeth.. which hurt like a mother fuck because they go back and come back out and go back in.. you know the rest.. fucked if i'm goin in to get that fixed..

anyways... yeah it's much like the doctor.. drag me in kickin n screamin.. try to hold me down in the chair to prevent running to the door, while we wait.. it's great!
